Environmental protection and nature conservation

Protection, not pollution

For a future in which people and nature can thrive equally.

Nature is the foundation of all life on earth – but it is also a sensitive system that is in danger of becoming unbalanced. To preserve biodiversity, habitats and ecosystems for future generations, we need to protect them, strengthen them and help them develop in harmony with human needs. Whether that means ensuring that we have clean air, fresh water, healthy soil or a stable climate, we have a responsibility to protect our planet from harmful influences. That’s why we are committed to environmental protection and nature conservation – and our approach is bold, visionary and based in science.

More than 50 per cent

of global economic output depends on an intact natural environment.

More than 10,000

chemical compounds from marine organisms are used in medicine.

4.9 trillion

US dollars’ worth of economic damage was caused by extreme weather events worldwide between 1993 and 2025.

140 million tonnes of waste

are floating in the world’s oceans. Up to 10 million tonnes are added every year.

Preserving moors

The world’s most effective carbon reservoirs

Around 95 per cent of moorlands in Germany are considered to be severely impaired or destroyed. This is a serious problem, because moors are a habitat for many plant and animal species.

Master Plan Ems 2050

Nature and the economy in harmony

The aim is to preserve the river as a valuable natural habitat, to improve the water quality and to protect endangered plant and animal species.

Our partnerships

As a charitable foundation, we work with partners who specialise in protecting nature.

Futurestories The image shows the logo of the Loki Schmidt Foundation with green, stylized plant shapes on the left and the foundation's name in capital letters on the right, all on a white background.

Loki Schmidt Foundation

The Loki Schmidt Foundation is committed to the preservation of rare plants and animals – and purchases land to protect moors as important carbon reservoirs in the long term.

WWF

WWF protects endangered animal species and their habitats around the world in order to preserve biodiversity for future generations – the Ems 2050 project is one example.

Futurestories – a middle-aged man in a grey shirt is standing outdoors holding a pair of binoculars. In the background, there is green foliage and a healthy peatland, highlighting peatland conservation and the importance of areas that naturally store CO₂.

„Nowhere does nature store CO₂ as efficiently as in peatlands. Protecting them is not a nice-to-have, but a necessity in the fight against the climate crisis.“

We need moor! Silent heroes in the fight against the climate crisis.

Moors store more carbon than all the world’s forests combined, protect against flooding and serve as a habitat for many endangered species. They are enormously important ecosystems, so we are working with the Loki Schmidt Foundation to ensure that they are preserved or rewetted. During a project visit to the moorlands around Hamburg, Axel Jahn, Managing Director of the Loki Schmidt Foundation, guides us through these beautiful landscapes.
